The town is known for its historic district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which includes the Barboursville Octagon House, a former estate of Governor Barbour. The octagonal mansion, designed by Thomas Jefferson, was severely damaged by a fire in 1884 and now stands in ruins as a historic landmark.
