The town was originally a farming community, but during the 20th century, it became known for its granite quarries. The town is home to the historic Brandywine Springs Park, a popular attraction during the early 1900s, known for its swimming pool, dance hall, and scenic railway. The park has since been restored and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
