Eleanor, West Virginia, founded in 1891, is a town in Putnam County. It was originally a lumber and coal community, and its name comes from the daughter of a local lumber mill owner. The town was incorporated in 1945. The most notable attraction in Eleanor is the Ann Mary Chester Shrine, a roadside shrine dedicated to a local woman who died in a car accident in 1953. The shrine has become a popular spot for pilgrimages and prayers.
