Mason, West Virginia is a town in Mason County, established in 1804 and incorporated in 1816. It is named after George Mason, a Founding Father and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The town is home to the Mason County Courthouse, a historic landmark built in 1924. During the American Civil War, Mason served as a base for both Union and Confederate troops at different times. Today, it has a population of approximately 2,000 people and serves as a gateway to the scenic New River Gorge National River.
