Barrow, Alaska, US, is the northernmost city in the United States, located in the North Slope Borough. It was established in 1901 as a whaling station and was later incorporated as a city in 1959. The town was originally named Utqiaġvik, the Iñupiaq name for the place, but was changed to Barrow in 1825 by explorer Sir John Franklin, after Sir John Barrow of the British Admiralty. The city is known for the Point Barrow landmark, the northernmost point in the United States.
