Ajo, AZ, US is a small town in Pima County, established in 1880 during the search for copper deposits. The town was named after the Spanish word for garlic, "ajo," due to the garlic-like odor of the native shrubs. The town's growth was driven by the opening of the New Cornelia Mine in 1911, which operated until 1985.
