Big Bear Lake, California, US is a man-made lake in the San Bernardino Mountains, created in 1884 by the construction of a dam on the Santa Ana River. The area was originally inhabited by the Serrano and Cahuilla tribes. In the early 20th century, it became a popular vacation spot, with the first hotel built in 1903. A notable attraction is the Big Bear Alpine Zoo, which has been providing refuge for injured, orphaned and imprinted wild animals since 1959.
