Garden Valley, California, US is located in the Sierra Nevada foothills, approximately 40 miles northeast of Sacramento. The area was originally inhabited by the Maidu and Miwok Native American tribes. Gold mining brought the first European settlers to the area in the mid-1800s. Today, Garden Valley is known for its natural beauty and outdoor recreation opportunities, including the nearby Black Chasm Cavern, a notable landmark and National Natural Landmark. The community has a population of around 1,000 residents and is primarily residential, with a few small businesses and a K-8 school.
