Brownsville is a city in Edmonson County, Kentucky, United States. It was established in 1797 and named after Major Decimuseturs Browne, a local landowner. The city served as a significant stop on the Louisville & Nashville Railroad and was the site of the first commercial oil well in Kentucky. The historic Bell's Tavern, built in 1830, is a notable attraction, known for its role as a stagecoach stop and a gathering place for Confederate sympathizers during the Civil War.
