Marshall, Minnesota, located in the southwest part of the state, was platted in 1872 and incorporated in 1873. It was named after a chief civil engineer for the Winona and St. Peter Railroad. The city served as a railroad hub and experienced growth during the late 19th century. Today, it is the county seat of Lyon County and is home to the Southwest Minnesota State University, which attracts students from the region.
