Kirkwood, Missouri, US is a suburban city established in 1853, located in St. Louis County. It was named after James P. Kirkwood, chief engineer of the Pacific Railroad. The city is known for its historic downtown district, which features a variety of shops, restaurants, and the famous Kirkwood Farmers' Market. Kirkwood was also the site of the first suburban branch of the St. Louis Public Library. Today, the city has a population of approximately 28,000 and covers an area of 9.2 square miles.
