Laurel, Montana, located in Yellowstone County, was established in 1882 as a railroad town. It was named after Laurel, Indiana, the hometown of the wife of one of the town's founders. Laurel experienced growth with the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railway and became a commercial center for the region. The town is home to the Laurel High School, which boasts a notable landmark, a large "L" on the hill overlooking the school, painted by students in 1936. Today, Laurel has a population of approximately 7,000 and continues to serve as an important agricultural and transportation hub in Montana.
