Arden, NC, US is a census-designated place in Buncombe County. It was founded in 1900 by two brothers, Ellison Adger Smyth and Gerard Smyth, as a planned community. The area was originally part of the Vanderbilt estate and was later sold to the Smyth brothers. Arden is known for its rural atmosphere and the large number of Christian camps and retreats, including the Ridgecrest Conference Center, a notable landmark and one of the largest Christian conference centers in the United States.
