Burke, South Dakota, located in Gregory County, was established in 1907 and named after John Burke, the governor of North Dakota at the time. The town was initially a railroad hub for the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Burke's population peaked in the 1920s, but has since declined. The town is known for its notable landmark, the Giant Slide, which was constructed in 1969 and stands at 120 feet tall.
