It was originally named Cole's Landing after an early settler, but was later renamed Onalaska in 1883, derived from a Native American word meaning "something to lean against." Onalaska is also home to the Great River State Trail, a 24-mile biking and hiking trail that offers scenic views of the Black River. The city has a population of approximately 19,000 as of 2020.
