Onalaska, Wisconsin, US is a city in La Crosse County, founded in 1851. It was originally named Cole's Landing after an early settler, but was later renamed Onalaska in 1883, derived from a Native American word meaning "something to lean against." The city is known for its outdoor activities, including the popular Onalaska Aquatic Center. Onalaska is also home to the Great River State Trail, a 24-mile biking and hiking trail that offers scenic views of the Black River. The city has a population of approximately 19,000 as of 2020.
