Naples, Florida, located on the Gulf of Mexico, was founded in 1886 by former Confederate general and Kentucky governor, John Stuart Williams, and his partner, Walter N. Haldeman, owner of the Louisville Courier-Journal. The city was named for the Italian city of Naples, and was designed to be a sophisticated resort destination. Today, Naples is known for its high-end shopping, dining, and golfing, as well as its beautiful beaches and the Naples Pier, a popular landmark for both tourists and locals.
