Terre Haute, Indiana, US, founded in 1816, is the county seat of Vigo County. It was named "High Land" by French explorers due to its location along the banks of the Wabash River. The city played a significant role during the American Civil War as a site for Union prison camps. Today, it is home to Indiana State University and the historic Candles Holocaust Museum, which honors the life of Holocaust survivor and local resident Eva Kor.
