Edinburg, Texas, US is the county seat of Hidalgo County and was founded in 1908. It was originally named Chapin Station in honor of Dennis Chapin, who was a land agent for the San Benito Land Company. The city was later renamed Edinburg in 1911 after Edinburg, North Dakota, where the wife of John Closner, one of the town's founders, was from. Edinburg is home to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, which was established in 2013 as a result of the merger of the University of Texas-Pan American and the University of Texas at Brownsville. A notable attraction in Edinburg is the Museum of South Texas History, which showcases the region's rich cultural heritage.
