Las Cruces is the largest city in southern New Mexico, US, and the county seat of Doña Ana County. Founded in 1849, it was originally named Mesilla and served as the capital of the Arizona Territory before New Mexico's statehood. The city was later renamed Las Cruces, meaning "the crosses," after the site of a Spanish colonial military camp. Notable for its agricultural economy, Las Cruces is also home to New Mexico State University and the White Sands Missile Range, the largest military installation in the US.
