Iron River, Michigan, located in the western part of the Upper Peninsula, was founded in the late 19th century during the area's mining boom. The city was named after the river that runs through it, which was used to transport iron ore from nearby mines. The population peaked in the 1920s, and since then, the city has shifted its focus to tourism and outdoor recreation. A notable attraction is the World's Largest Indian Statue, located just outside of Iron River, which stands at 52 feet tall and honors the area's Native American heritage.
